Questions and answers
What is micro-skin needling?
Micro-skin needling uses a medical device to create thousands of microscopic needle columns in the dermis (the deeper layer of skin). The needle columns close rapidly, allowing the skin to start the process of healing the tiny damaged areas and resulting in the formation of collagen, the production of new skin cells, an enhanced blood supply and the rejuvenation of the dermis layer, the internal scaffolding of the skin.
What type of micro-skin needling system does Dr Rose use?
Dr Rose uses the precision-designed electronic micro-skin needling system, EDS Regenerate, from the manufacturers of Genuine Dermaroller™. EDS Regenerate uses advanced engineering to produce the best results with the minimum of discomfort. The technology allows Dr Rose to adjust the needle depth and speed for each area being treated. The needle cartridge is single-use and sterile.
What happens during EDS Regenerate treatment?
To minimise discomfort, Dr Rose will apply a topical anaesthetic prior to treatment. Once this has taken full effect, Dr Rose applies the eDermastamp, a tip containing a number of microscopic needles, to the affected areas of skin. The needle tip plate moves up and down and the needle depth and speed are adjusted depending on the condition of each area. A high-quality sterile hyaluronic acid product is also applied, to maximise results.
When will I see results?
Following treatment your skin will start to repair and renew itself, working below the surface in the dermis. Your complexion will be noticeably brighter within the first few weeks after treatment, but it can take up to six weeks to see optimal results of regeneration and repair. The process will continue to work over the following months, leaving you with natural, long-lasting results. When EDS Regenerate is used for scarring, the reduction in the appearance of scars will become more noticeable as time goes on.
Is it painful?
Dr Rose will apply a topical anaesthetic prior to treatment to minimise any pain. You will experience mild discomfort during treatment. Immediately after treatment your skin will tingle and feel warmer and tighter than usual. This usually starts to subside within one to two hours and will resolve completely within 24 to 36 hours.
How long does the treatment take?
It will normally take up to 30 minutes for the topical anaesthetic to numb the skin and between 20 and 45 minutes for the procedure itself, depending on the area and condition being treated. You should be able to return to normal activities the same day or the next day after your treatment. In most cases, Dr Rose will recommend that treatment consists of a series of three procedures with approximately six weeks between them. For the treatment of acne scars and other types of scarring it may be necessary for Dr Rose to extend your treatment, carrying out up to five procedures.
Is micro-skin needling safe? What are the potential side effects?
Micro-skin needling is a very safe procedure when carried out by an experienced professional such as Dr Rose. Typically, there will be a small amount of bleeding and redness during treatment. This is normal and generally resolves quickly. Some patients will experience redness for a few days after treatment, resembling mild-to-moderate sunburn. Because the needle columns created in the skin during micro-skin needling are so tiny, there is no risk of permanent scarring. It is very important to use high-factor sun protection for at least two weeks after treatment. Dr Rose will discuss full aftercare instructions during your consultation.
